About Shiga Kogen Kumanoyu

Located within the expansive Joshinetsu Kogen National Park in Nagano, Japan, Shiga Kogen Kumanoyu is a renowned ski resort famous for its high elevation and distinctive dry powder snow. Historically known as a “skiers-only” mountain, it has cultivated a rich, traditional alpine culture since its early days. The resort’s unique bowl-shaped geography naturally shields it from harsh winds, preserving excellent snow quality while offering stunning panoramic views of the Japanese Alps. Kumanoyu’s base sits at a lofty 1,690 meters (5,544 feet) and rises to an elevation of 1,950 meters (6,397 feet), providing a respectable 260-meter (853-foot) vertical drop.

Terrain and Trails

While part of the massive Shiga Kogen network that boasts over 1,480 acres collectively, Kumanoyu itself provides a focused, high-quality ski experience with 5 lifts servicing a variety of trails. The terrain is a well-balanced mix, with 30% dedicated to beginners, 40% for intermediates, and 30% for advanced skiers. The mountain is beloved for its steep pitches, notably the challenging Mogul course, and consistently well-groomed pistes. Its north-facing slopes ensure the snow stays crisp, making it a reliable destination for pristine Japanese powder from late November through May.
